Psalms for 2 of the month

Chapter 10–17

1לָמָה יְהֹוָה תַּעֲמֹד בְּרָחוֹק תַּעְלִים לְעִתּוֹת בַּצָּרָֽהWhy, O ETERNAL One, do You stand aloof, heedless in times of trouble?

2בְּגַאֲוַת רָשָׁע יִדְלַק עָנִי יִתָּפְשׂוּ בִּמְזִמּוֹת זוּ חָשָֽׁבוּThe wicked in their arrogance hound the lowly— may they be caught in the schemes they devise!

3כִּֽי־הִלֵּל רָשָׁע עַל־תַּאֲוַת נַפְשׁוֹ וּבֹצֵעַ בֵּרֵךְ נִאֵץ יְהֹוָֽהThe wicked crow about their unbridled lusts; the grasping revile and scorn GOD.

4רָשָׁע כְּגֹבַהּ אַפּוֹ בַּל־יִדְרֹשׁ אֵין אֱלֹהִים כׇּל־מְזִמּוֹתָֽיוThe wicked, arrogant as they are, in all their scheming [think], “God does not care and does not call to account.”

5יָחִילוּ דְרָכָו בְּכׇל־עֵת מָרוֹם מִשְׁפָּטֶיךָ מִנֶּגְדּוֹ כׇּל־צוֹרְרָיו יָפִיחַ בָּהֶֽםTheir ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are far beyond them; they snort at all their foes.

6אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ בַּל־אֶמּוֹט לְדֹר וָדֹר אֲשֶׁר לֹֽא־בְרָֽעSuch people think, “I shall not be shaken, through all time never be in trouble.”

7אָלָה פִּיהוּ מָלֵא וּמִרְמוֹת וָתֹךְ תַּחַת לְשׁוֹנוֹ עָמָל וָאָֽוֶןTheir mouth is full of oaths, deceit, and fraud; mischief and evil are under their tongue.

8יֵשֵׁב בְּמַאְרַב חֲצֵרִים בַּֽמִּסְתָּרִים יַהֲרֹג נָקִי עֵינָיו לְֽחֵלְכָה יִצְפֹּֽנוּThey lurk in outlying places; from a covert they slay the innocent; their eyes spy out the hapless.

9יֶאֱרֹב בַּמִּסְתָּר כְּאַרְיֵה בְסֻכֹּה יֶאֱרֹב לַחֲטוֹף עָנִי יַחְטֹף עָנִי בְּמׇשְׁכוֹ בְרִשְׁתּֽוֹThey wait in a covert like a lion in a lair; wait to seize the lowly; they seize the lowly as they pull their net shut;

10(ודכה) [יִדְכֶּה] יָשֹׁחַ וְנָפַל בַּעֲצוּמָיו (חלכאים) [חֵל כָּאִֽים]they stoop, they crouch, and the hapless fall prey to their might.

11אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ שָׁכַֽח אֵל הִסְתִּיר פָּנָיו בַּל־רָאָה לָנֶֽצַחThey think, “God is not mindful, the divine face is hidden and never looks.”

12קוּמָה יְהֹוָה אֵל נְשָׂא יָדֶךָ אַל־תִּשְׁכַּח (עניים) [עֲנָוִֽים]Rise, O ETERNAL One! Strike at them, O God! Do not forget the lowly.

13עַל־מֶה נִאֵץ רָשָׁע אֱלֹהִים אָמַר בְּלִבּוֹ לֹא תִדְרֹֽשׁWhy should the wicked scorn God, thinking You do not call to account?

14רָאִתָה כִּי־אַתָּה עָמָל וָכַעַס תַּבִּיט לָתֵת בְּיָדֶךָ עָלֶיךָ יַעֲזֹב חֵלֵכָה יָתוֹם אַתָּה הָיִיתָ עוֹזֵֽרYou do look! You take note of mischief and vexation! To requite is in Your power. To You the hapless can entrust themselves; You have ever been the orphans’ help.

15שְׁבֹר זְרוֹעַ רָשָׁע וָרָע תִּֽדְרוֹשׁ־רִשְׁעוֹ בַל־תִּמְצָֽאO break the power of the wicked and evildoers, so that when You look for their wickedness You will find it no more.

16יְהֹוָה מֶלֶךְ עוֹלָם וָעֶד אָבְדוּ גוֹיִם מֵאַרְצֽוֹGOD is sovereign for ever and ever; the nations will perish from this land.

17תַּאֲוַת עֲנָוִים שָׁמַעְתָּ יְהֹוָה תָּכִין לִבָּם תַּקְשִׁיב אׇזְנֶֽךָYou will listen to the entreaty of the lowly, O ETERNAL One, You will make their hearts firm; You will incline Your ear

18לִשְׁפֹּט יָתוֹם וָדָךְ בַּל־יוֹסִיף עוֹד לַעֲרֹץ אֱנוֹשׁ מִן־הָאָֽרֶץto champion the orphan and the downtrodden, that mere earthly mortals tyrannize no more.

1לַמְנַצֵּחַ לְדָוִד בַּֽיהֹוָה חָסִיתִי אֵיךְ תֹּאמְרוּ לְנַפְשִׁי (נודו) [נוּדִי] הַרְכֶם צִפּֽוֹרFor the leader. Of David. In GOD I take refuge; how can you say to me, “Take to the hills like a bird!

2כִּי הִנֵּה הָרְשָׁעִים יִדְרְכוּן קֶשֶׁת כּוֹנְנוּ חִצָּם עַל־יֶתֶר לִירוֹת בְּמוֹ־אֹפֶל לְיִשְׁרֵי־לֵֽבFor see, the wicked bend the bow, they set their arrow on the string to shoot from the shadows at the upright.

3כִּי הַשָּׁתוֹת יֵהָרֵסוּן צַדִּיק מַה־פָּעָֽלWhen the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

4יְהֹוָה בְּֽהֵיכַל קׇדְשׁוֹ יְהֹוָה בַּשָּׁמַיִם כִּסְאוֹ עֵינָיו יֶחֱזוּ עַפְעַפָּיו יִבְחֲנוּ בְּנֵי אָדָֽםGOD is in the divine holy palace; GOD—whose throne is in heaven, whose eyes behold, whose gaze searches humankind.

5יְהֹוָה צַדִּיק יִבְחָן וְרָשָׁע וְאֹהֵב חָמָס שָֽׂנְאָה נַפְשֽׁוֹGOD seeks out someone righteous, but loathes the wicked one who loves injustice.

6יַמְטֵר עַל־רְשָׁעִים פַּחִים אֵשׁ וְגׇפְרִית וְרוּחַ זִלְעָפוֹת מְנָת כּוֹסָֽם[God] will rain down upon the wicked blazing coals and sulfur; a scorching wind shall be their lot.

7כִּֽי־צַדִּיק יְהֹוָה צְדָקוֹת אָהֵב יָשָׁר יֶחֱזוּ פָנֵֽימוֹFor GOD is righteous, and loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold God’s face.

1לַמְנַצֵּחַ עַֽל־הַשְּׁמִינִית מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִֽדFor the leader; on the sheminith. A psalm of David.

2הוֹשִׁיעָה יְהֹוָה כִּֽי־גָמַר חָסִיד כִּי־פַסּוּ אֱמוּנִים מִבְּנֵי אָדָֽםHelp, O ETERNAL One! For the faithful are no more; the loyal have vanished from among mortals.

3שָׁוְא יְֽדַבְּרוּ אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ שְׂפַת חֲלָקוֹת בְּלֵב וָלֵב יְדַבֵּֽרוּPeople speak lies to one another; their speech is smooth; they talk with duplicity.

4יַכְרֵת יְהֹוָה כׇּל־שִׂפְתֵי חֲלָקוֹת לָשׁוֹן מְדַבֶּרֶת גְּדֹלֽוֹתMay GOD cut off all flattering lips, every tongue that speaks arrogance.

5אֲשֶׁר אָמְרוּ לִלְשֹׁנֵנוּ נַגְבִּיר שְׂפָתֵינוּ אִתָּנוּ מִי אָדוֹן לָֽנוּThey say, “By our tongues we shall prevail; with lips such as ours, who can be our master?”

6מִשֹּׁד עֲנִיִּים מֵאֶנְקַת אֶבְיוֹנִים עַתָּה אָקוּם יֹאמַר יְהֹוָה אָשִׁית בְּיֵשַׁע יָפִיחַֽ־לֽוֹ“Because of the groans of the plundered poor and needy, I will now act,” says GOD. “I will give help,” [God] affirms to them.

7אִמְרוֹת יְהֹוָה אֲמָרוֹת טְהֹרוֹת כֶּסֶף צָרוּף בַּעֲלִיל לָאָרֶץ מְזֻקָּק שִׁבְעָתָֽיִםGOD’s words are pure words, silver purged in an earthen crucible, refined sevenfold.

8אַתָּֽה־יְהֹוָה תִּשְׁמְרֵם תִּצְּרֶנּוּ מִן־הַדּוֹר זוּ לְעוֹלָֽםYou, O ETERNAL One, will keep them, guarding each from this age evermore.

9סָבִיב רְשָׁעִים יִתְהַלָּכוּן כְּרֻם זֻלּוּת לִבְנֵי אָדָֽםOn every side the wicked roam when baseness is exalted among mortals.

1לַמְנַצֵּחַ מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִֽדFor the leader. A psalm of David.

2עַד־אָנָה יְהֹוָה תִּשְׁכָּחֵנִי נֶצַח עַד־אָנָה תַּסְתִּיר אֶת־פָּנֶיךָ מִמֶּֽנִּיHow long, O ETERNAL One; will You ignore me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?

3עַד־אָנָה אָשִׁית עֵצוֹת בְּנַפְשִׁי יָגוֹן בִּלְבָבִי יוֹמָם עַד־אָנָה יָרוּם אֹיְבִי עָלָֽיHow long will I have cares on my mind, grief in my heart all day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand?

4הַבִּיטָֽה עֲנֵנִי יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהָי הָאִירָה עֵינַי פֶּן־אִישַׁן הַמָּֽוֶתLook at me, answer me, O my ETERNAL God! Restore the luster to my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

5פֶּן־יֹאמַר אֹיְבִי יְכׇלְתִּיו צָרַי יָגִילוּ כִּי אֶמּֽוֹטlest my enemy say, “I have overcome him,” my foes exult when I totter.

6וַאֲנִי בְּחַסְדְּךָ בָטַחְתִּי יָגֵל לִבִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ אָשִׁירָה לַֽיהֹוָה כִּי גָמַל עָלָֽיBut I trust in Your faithfulness, my heart will exult in Your deliverance. I will sing to GOD, who has been good to me.

1לַמְנַצֵּחַ לְדָוִד אָמַר נָבָל בְּלִבּוֹ אֵין אֱלֹהִים הִֽשְׁחִיתוּ הִֽתְעִיבוּ עֲלִילָה אֵין עֹֽשֵׂה־טֽוֹבFor the leader. Of David. The scoundrel thinks, “God does not care.” Human deeds are corrupt and loathsome; no one does good.

2יְֽהֹוָה מִשָּׁמַיִם הִשְׁקִיף עַֽל־בְּנֵי־אָדָם לִרְאוֹת הֲיֵשׁ מַשְׂכִּיל דֹּרֵשׁ אֶת־אֱלֹהִֽיםGOD looks down from heaven on humankind to find someone with understanding, someone mindful of God.

3הַכֹּל סָר יַחְדָּו נֶאֱלָחוּ אֵין עֹֽשֵׂה־טוֹב אֵין גַּם־אֶחָֽדAll have turned bad, altogether foul; there is no one who does good, not even one.

4הֲלֹא יָדְעוּ כׇּל־פֹּעֲלֵי אָוֶן אֹכְלֵי עַמִּי אָכְלוּ לֶחֶם יְהֹוָה לֹא קָרָֽאוּAre they so witless, all those evildoers, who devour my people as they devour food, and do not invoke GOD?

5שָׁם פָּחֲדוּ פָחַד כִּֽי־אֱלֹהִים בְּדוֹר צַדִּֽיקThere they will be seized with fright, for God is present in the circle of the righteous.

6עֲצַת־עָנִי תָבִישׁוּ כִּי יְהֹוָה מַחְסֵֽהוּYou may set at naught the counsel of the lowly, but GOD is their refuge.

7מִי־יִתֵּן מִצִּיּוֹן יְשׁוּעַת יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּשׁוּב יְהֹוָה שְׁבוּת עַמּוֹ יָגֵל יַעֲקֹב יִשְׂמַח יִשְׂרָאֵֽלO that the deliverance of Israel might come from Zion! When GOD restores the fortunes of this covenanted people, Jacob will exult, Israel will rejoice.

1מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד יְהֹוָה מִי־יָגוּר בְּאׇהֳלֶךָ מִֽי־יִשְׁכֹּן בְּהַר קׇדְשֶֽׁךָA psalm of David. GOD, who may sojourn in Your tent, who may dwell on Your holy mountain?

2הוֹלֵךְ תָּמִים וּפֹעֵל צֶדֶק וְדֹבֵר אֱמֶת בִּלְבָבֽוֹAnyone who lives without blame, who does what is right, and in their heart acknowledges the truth;

3לֹֽא־רָגַל עַל־לְשֹׁנוֹ לֹא־עָשָׂה לְרֵעֵהוּ רָעָה וְחֶרְפָּה לֹא־נָשָׂא עַל־קְרֹבֽוֹwhose tongue is not given to evil; who has never done harm to a compatriot, or borne reproach for [acts toward] a neighbor;

4נִבְזֶה בְּֽעֵינָיו נִמְאָס וְאֶת־יִרְאֵי יְהֹוָה יְכַבֵּד נִשְׁבַּע לְהָרַע וְלֹא יָמִֽרfor whom someone contemptible is abhorrent, but who honors those who fear GOD; who keeps an oath even when it hurts;

5כַּסְפּוֹ לֹא־נָתַן בְּנֶשֶׁךְ וְשֹׁחַד עַל־נָקִי לֹא־לָקָח עֹֽשֵׂה־אֵלֶּה לֹא יִמּוֹט לְעוֹלָֽםwho has never lent money at interest, or accepted a bribe against the innocent. One who acts thus shall never be shaken.

1מִכְתָּם לְדָוִד שׇֽׁמְרֵנִי אֵל כִּֽי־חָסִיתִי בָֽךְA michtam of David. Protect me, O God, for I seek refuge in You.

2אָמַרְתְּ לַֽיהֹוָה אֲדֹנָי אָתָּה טוֹבָתִי בַּל־עָלֶֽיךָI say to GOD, “You are my Sovereign, my benefactor; there is none above You.”

3לִקְדוֹשִׁים אֲשֶׁר־בָּאָרֶץ הֵמָּה וְאַדִּירֵי כׇּל־חֶפְצִי־בָֽםAs to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, my whole desire concerning them is that

4יִרְבּוּ עַצְּבוֹתָם אַחֵר מָהָרוּ בַּל־אַסִּיךְ נִסְכֵּיהֶם מִדָּם וּֽבַל־אֶשָּׂא אֶת־שְׁמוֹתָם עַל־שְׂפָתָֽיthose who espouse another [god] may have many sorrows! I will have no part of their bloody libations; their names will not pass my lips.

5יְֽהֹוָה מְנָת־חֶלְקִי וְכוֹסִי אַתָּה תּוֹמִיךְ גּוֹרָלִֽיGOD is my allotted share and portion; You control my fate.

6חֲבָלִים נָֽפְלוּ־לִי בַּנְּעִמִים אַף־נַחֲלָת שָֽׁפְרָה עָלָֽיDelightful country has fallen to my lot; lovely indeed is my estate.

7אֲבָרֵךְ אֶת־יְהֹוָה אֲשֶׁר יְעָצָנִי אַף־לֵילוֹת יִסְּרוּנִי כִלְיוֹתָֽיI bless GOD who has guided me; my conscience admonishes me at night.

8שִׁוִּיתִי יְהֹוָה לְנֶגְדִּי תָמִיד כִּי מִֽימִינִי בַּל־אֶמּֽוֹטI am ever mindful of GOD’s presence— who is at my right hand; I shall never be shaken.

9לָכֵן שָׂמַח לִבִּי וַיָּגֶל כְּבוֹדִי אַף־בְּשָׂרִי יִשְׁכֹּן לָבֶֽטַחSo my heart rejoices, my whole being exults, and my body rests secure.

10כִּי לֹא־תַעֲזֹב נַפְשִׁי לִשְׁאוֹל לֹֽא־תִתֵּן חֲסִידְךָ לִרְאוֹת שָֽׁחַתFor You will not abandon me to Sheol, or let Your faithful one see the Pit.

11תּֽוֹדִיעֵנִי אֹרַח חַיִּים שֹׂבַע שְׂמָחוֹת אֶת־פָּנֶיךָ נְעִמוֹת בִּימִינְךָ נֶֽצַחYou will teach me the path of life. In Your presence is perfect joy; delights are ever in Your right hand.

1תְּפִלָּה לְדָוִד שִׁמְעָה יְהֹוָה צֶדֶק הַקְשִׁיבָה רִנָּתִי הַאֲזִינָה תְפִלָּתִי בְּלֹא שִׂפְתֵי מִרְמָֽהA prayer of David. Hear, O ETERNAL One, what is just; heed my cry, give ear to my prayer, uttered without guile.

2מִלְּפָנֶיךָ מִשְׁפָּטִי יֵצֵא עֵינֶיךָ תֶּחֱזֶינָה מֵישָׁרִֽיםMy vindication will come from You; Your eyes will behold what is right.

3בָּחַנְתָּ לִבִּי פָּקַדְתָּ לַּיְלָה צְרַפְתַּנִי בַל־תִּמְצָא זַמֹּתִי בַּל־יַעֲבׇר־פִּֽיYou have visited me at night, probed my mind, You have tested me and found nothing amiss; I determined that my mouth should not transgress.

4לִפְעֻלּוֹת אָדָם בִּדְבַר שְׂפָתֶיךָ אֲנִי שָׁמַרְתִּי אׇרְחוֹת פָּרִֽיץAs for mortals’ dealings, in accord with the command of Your lips, I have kept in view the fate of the lawless.

5תָּמֹךְ אֲשֻׁרַי בְּמַעְגְּלוֹתֶיךָ בַּל־נָמוֹטּוּ פְעָמָֽיMy feet have held to Your paths; my legs have not given way.

6אֲנִֽי־קְרָאתִיךָ כִֽי־תַעֲנֵנִי אֵל הַֽט־אׇזְנְךָ לִי שְׁמַע אִמְרָתִֽיI call on You; You will answer me, God; turn Your ear to me, hear what I say.

7הַפְלֵה חֲסָדֶיךָ מוֹשִׁיעַ חוֹסִים מִמִּתְקוֹמְמִים בִּֽימִינֶֽךָDisplay Your faithfulness in wondrous deeds, You who deliver with Your right hand those who seek refuge from assailants.

8שׇׁמְרֵנִי כְּאִישׁוֹן בַּת־עָיִן בְּצֵל כְּנָפֶיךָ תַּסְתִּירֵֽנִיGuard me like the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings

9מִפְּנֵי רְשָׁעִים זוּ שַׁדּוּנִי אֹיְבַי בְּנֶפֶשׁ יַקִּיפוּ עָלָֽיfrom the wicked who despoil me, my mortal enemies who encircle me.

10חֶלְבָּמוֹ סָּגְרוּ פִּימוֹ דִּבְּרוּ בְגֵאֽוּתTheir hearts are closed to pity; they mouth arrogance;

11אַשֻּׁרֵינוּ עַתָּה (סבבוני) [סְבָבוּנוּ] עֵינֵיהֶם יָשִׁיתוּ לִנְטוֹת בָּאָֽרֶץnow they hem in our feet on every side; they set their eyes roaming over the land.

12דִּמְיֹנוֹ כְּאַרְיֵה יִכְסוֹף לִטְרֹף וְכִכְפִיר יֹשֵׁב בְּמִסְתָּרִֽיםThey are like a lion eager for prey, a king of beasts lying in wait.

13קוּמָה יְהֹוָה קַדְּמָה פָנָיו הַכְרִיעֵהוּ פַּלְּטָה נַפְשִׁי מֵרָשָׁע חַרְבֶּֽךָRise, O ETERNAL One! Go forth to meet my enemies. Bring them down; rescue me from the wicked with Your sword,

14מִמְתִֽים־יָדְךָ יְהֹוָה מִֽמְתִים מֵחֶלֶד חֶלְקָם בַּֽחַיִּים (וצפינך) [וּֽצְפוּנְךָ] תְּמַלֵּא בִטְנָם יִשְׂבְּעוּ בָנִים וְהִנִּיחוּ יִתְרָם לְעוֹלְלֵיהֶֽםfrom mortals, O ETERNAL One, with Your hand, from mortals whose share in life is fleeting. But as to Your treasured ones, fill their bellies. Their children too shall be satisfied, and have something to leave over for their young.

15אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶה פָנֶיךָ אֶשְׂבְּעָה בְהָקִיץ תְּמוּנָתֶֽךָThen I, justified, will behold Your face; awake, I am filled with the vision of You.
